The Benefits of Ultrasonic Testing
There are a variety of different inspections that you can carry out on your boat. Most of which rely on a keen attention to detail from your surveyors. However, with advancements in technology there have been great improvements on the ways that checks can be carried out on boats.
One of these is Ultrasonic testing.
Also known as UT, ultrasonic testing is a non-destructive method of finding some of the hidden flaws of your boat. It can pick up those those that may not be picked up by the naked eye.
During this type of inspection, a specialist ultrasonic thickness testing device is used. The purpose of this is to find out the remaining thickness of the plates of the boat; determining integrity of the steel and aluminium vessels.
Ultrasonic testing can be conducted as a standalone inspection of your vessel, although they are also seen alongside standard checks of the exterior and interior components.
After the ultrasonic testing is completed, you will receive an ultrasonic thickness report. This report will not only give details of the areas that have been checked and their results, but should also provide you with diagrams too.
As a boat owner it is important that you understand all the key tests that should be carried out on your vessel. You should also know that a failure to ensure that it is seaworthy is not only costly but also can result in more serious consequences.
