Why to Get a Boat Survey
There are many reasons why you can consider having a boat survey. Let's take a look at some of the most important reasons and how you can benefit from it.
There may be some times where an insurer needs a survey to be done on one of your vessels. Specifically, those vessels that are over a certain age, or those that are home-built and refitted. First of all, find the right person for the job. They need to be knowledgeable in their area to give you an accurate survey.
Also make sure that the survey is independent of the buyer, seller and any other person involved in the sale.
The surveyor you use should have professional indemnity insurance, but many people will have their qualifications with them. They may also be members of professional bodies, like the Yacht Designers and Surveyors Association (YDSA).
To find a local expert you can look at the local marina or you can consult a Yacht Broker. This way you'll find a great reference and consider a few people for the job.
Then you should consider the type of survey that you want. You can either cover the entire craft including engines, the deck, fittings, hull, etc.
You can also have the survey done out of the water, i.e. a 'dry' survey. Remember to have a value indicated about the vessel.
To be acceptable to an insurer they may have their own rules, so make sure you adhere to them. You may also need to have this survey done for someone else.
